Community Sociology

Community sociology studies how people form, maintain, and lose organized social relations in a shared context. That context is usually a territory — a neighborhood, town, city, suburb, or rural area — and sometimes a non-territorial or mediated setting that still functions as a community. The field asks how settlement form, local institutions, informal gathering places, and everyday association shape belonging, mutual recognition, and the ability to act together. The unit of analysis is the community as a social form, not the individual psyche and not the design of streets as such.
